Cameron Todd was an idealistic young police officer in the town of Houston, Mississippi. Early in what appeared to be a very promising career he was, suddenly and inexplicably, arrested and charged with Capital Rape. It was his first arrest and on a charge which, in Mississippi, can carry the death penalty.
To his family and to friends and supporters in the Houston area, the reasons behind the arrest and prosecution never became clear. He as charged by a very troubled young woman who, admittedly, had brought the same false charges against a large number of others. In most of the other cases she retracted the charges and the accused were released... with a damaged reputation and some emotional trauma but, otherwise, unscathed. She has also retracted her charges against Cameron but the Prosecution refused to accept her retraction and, in spite of having no reliable evidence of any kind, continued the prosecution.
Cameron was an outsider in Houston. He had no family or close relatives there except for his wife and son. There is much speculation, locally, that this made it easier for the prosecution to ignore the facts in his case. He believed in "Liberty and Justice for all" and was a one-man crusader for equal treatment, under the law, for Blacks and Hispanics... not a popular position in rural Mississippi. Some people believe that this, combined with the fact that his wife is a Korean National, was enough to make him an easy target.
What ever the reasons he was charged and was finally convicted (he steadfastly refused any deal offered by the prosecution and maintained his innocence, throughout) on a lesser included charge and is now serving a twelve year sentence in the penitentiary.
